Once that relic is recovered, that particular temple is gone forever — so while it is a race against other players, especially if player numbers go up, generally Phantom Abyss is single-player and can be taken at whatever pace the player chooses.

At one point, I was being chased down a narrow corridor by a flaming head Guardian who was trying to eat me. After falling through the cracks right by the doorway, I restarted at the other end of the corridor. Unfortunately, this meant that the Guardian lay between me and the next checkpoint.

However, players who deploy it as a pass-the-controller experience at their next party will almost certainly get a lot out of it. This is an excellent game to play with a few friends after a drink or two, with everyone taking a run and passing the controls on when they either die or complete a level. It's got lots of dungeons to explore, tons of items to equip, and some pretty cool boss fights. It missed a good opportunity by Phantom Abyss Gameplay not letting you progress through the story in co-op mode, but it's still a fun single-player experience.

An upgrade well that provides permanent upgrades can be found in the HUB and in the first floor of temples.

But one of Phantom Abyss' coolest features is its asynchronous multiplayer in the classic Abyss Mode. The ghosts of other, failed adventurers pop up in the level as you go, letting you see how other people died gruesomely on the way.

This randomised floating mongrel teleports from room to room, shooting lasers or dropping bombs that slow the player down. The problem with this harassment enemy is that because you’re the only ‘real’ player in your run, it only seems to want to shoot at you rather than the many ghost players pinwheeling about you.

To avoid going into the hub and having to restart the whole game you should not pick up the relic unless you have set a new personal best and instead quit to main menu.

Phantom Abyss is an asynchronous multiplayer title, which in practice means that while the game is technically multiplayer and lots of players are competing for the same relic in the same temple, none of the players seen in the level are live.
